DOCUMENTARY
FILM - «BUY MORE INCENSE»
British Asian musicians talk
about the history of their music in Great Britain, the music
business, their own position in British society and their future
visions. They also give us a glimpse at the various music styles
they represent, such as bhangra, worldfusion-cyberpunk, break
beats and other kinds of popular music, in which they often
combine modern technology and traditional instruments and sounds.
This documentary film has been produced by Thomas Burkhalter
and Michael Spahr.

MUSIC
AND NOISE FROM CONTEMPORARY BEIRUT - LECTURE
How should one define ‘locality’ and ‘place’
in music in the contemporary societies of our globalized world?
This is one of the key questions of my PHD-research into the
«subcultural» music scenes in Beirut. Its focus
lies on Lebanese artists who work with electro-acoustic music,
musique concrete, free improvised music, abstract noise, and
death metal. These musicians spent the first fifteen years of
their lives in the Lebanese civil war (1975 – 1990) and
know all the weapons of war just by listening to their sounds.

CALL
FOR SUBMISSIONS
THE
ARAB AVANT-GARDE: MUSICAL INNOVATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST
We are currently soliciting chapter proposals for an anthology
on the largely under-researched area of avant-garde music affiliated
to the Arab world. All definitions of experimentalism and any
disciplinary (or anti-disciplinary) approaches will be considered
as we are hoping to produce as varied a volume as possible.
Edited by Thomas Burkhalter, Kay Dickinson and Benjamin J. Harbert.
