Mixtape

How does the relationship of artists with their gear affect the composition? Listen to a mind bending mixtape-collage with statements about the use of gear in electronic music compostion, eerie sounds, and weird loops by the Peruvian musician and sound researcher Ale Hop of the platform «Nuts and Bolts».

The mix was produced by the Peruvian musician and sound researcher Ale Hop, collaborator of «Nuts and Bolts», a platform that builds structures and circumstances that facilitate engagement with gear and gear-talk from a diverse standpoint. The piece was crafted as a sound-collage of excerpts from the Nuts and Bolt’s podcasts and tutorials from which we can hear fragments of conversations and insights about technology and music composition of artists such as Andrea Parkins, Jenny Hval, Jessica Ekomane, Jenny Berger Myhre, Jlin, Jessica Sligter, Guro Skumsnes Moe, and Sukitoa O Namau, mixed with selected music from the artists, and one track from Ale’s upcoming album The Life of Insects.

Biography

Ale Hop (Alejandra Cárdenas) began her career in the 2000s in Lima’s underground music scene. Her body of work includes diverse formats such as live shows, albums, multimedia artworks, and research. Whether alone, maneuvering an intricate repertoire of electric guitar techniques, or in collaboration with other artists, her live performances have a physical and emotional character. She recently launched two collaborative projects: Agua Dulce, with percussionist Laura Robles; and Near and Remote Activation Practices, with Argentinean artist Tatiana Heuman, experimenting with self-built South American instruments. She also co-founded the festival Radical Sounds Latin America (which she co-curated 2019–2021) and today directs the editorial platform Contingent Sounds, which aims at facilitating critical discourses and artistic research. In recent years, small-scale studios in Nairobi have begun producing music locally, and some of their output reaches millions of listeners in Kenya, or create buzz and noise in international niche music scenes. Their producers and musicians are turning old hierarchies upside down, often calling for social and political reforms. But they’re also facing a lot of resistance.

The TIMEZONES podcast series plunges into the world of artists and their practices, asking: what does living and working in culture and the arts involve in different countries, cities, and contexts today? The artists’ thoughts on their moods, their social, political, and intellectual realities and their philosophies (of life) have been worked up into experimental audio collages.

The podcasts run the gamut of formats and content, from straight journalism to experimental and documentary approaches, ethnography and fiction, sound art, and improvisation. The TIMEZONES series endeavours to create new artistic forms of storytelling, listening and exchange across the boundaries of geography, time zones, genres, and practices.

Biography

Dr. Thomas Burkhalter is an anthropologist/ethnomusicologist, AV-artist, and writer from Bern (Switzerland). He is the founder and director of Norient and the Norient Festival (NF), co-directed AV-performances and documentary films (e.g. «Contradict», Berner Filmpreis 2020 + Al-Jazeera Witness), and is the author and co-editor of several books (e.g., «Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut», Routledge, «The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East», Wesleyan University Press). He teaches regularly at universities, and runs workshops for arts institutions. Since 2022 he produces the Norient Mixtape for Swiss National Radio SRF3. Currently, he is working on his new music project «Melodies In My Head», and on the podcast series «South Asian Sound Stories» with musicians from the UK, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Norient Musikdebatte: Wie sinnvoll sind Residencies?

Im Rahmen der Kulturgespräche des Musikfestivals Bern diskutierte Norient über den Sinn und Unsinn von Musikaustauschprogrammen und Residencies. Was bringen sie? Wie muss ein Projekt angelegt sein, damit es nachhaltig ist? Wer profitiert von solchen Stipendien, wer wird ausgeschlossen? Eine Norient Musikdebatte als Podcast.

Im temporären Studio auf dem Berner Waisenhausplatz waren zu Gast: Dahlia Borsche vom Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD, der Residency-erfahrene Komponist Alican çamcı und der Berner Musiker Werner Hasler. Moderiert hat die Norient-Redakteurin und Kuratorin Theresa Beyer.

Die Diskussion fand statt im Rahmen des vom Bundesamt für Kultur BAK der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft geförderten Projekts «Norient Musikdebatten» und entstand in Kooperation mit dem Vermittlungsprogramm «Radio Antenne» des Musikfestivals Bern 2019 und Radio Bern RaBe.

Biography

Theresa Beyer gehört seit 2011 als Editorin, Kuratorin und Mitherausgeberin des Buches «Seismographic Sounds – Visions of a New World» zum Kernteam von Norient und beschäftigt sich mit Themen wie Queeren Musikkulturen, experimenteller Musik in Städten wie Belgrad oder Neu Delhi, und reflektiert in Vorträgen über die Chancen des multilokalen Kuratierens.
